Ultra-fast current differential protection with high-sensitivity for HVDC transmission lines

Abstract Protection of transmission lines is the most important defense against faults in multi-terminal HVDC system. Up until now, no single protection can balance operation speed and sensitivity needed for all fault types. To solve this problem, a novel current differential line proposed paper. The intrinsic properties are analyzed first. Then, essence ideal revealed fundamental relations between models performance degradation existing protections discussed. Based on analysis, scheme, including detection faulty pole selection, developed, Bergeron model used to describe electrical wave propagation process along line, resulting only simple computations each calculation cycle. Finally, simulation Wudongde ± 800 kV project China established PSCAD/EMTDC verification. By discussing diversified transient processes, results prove that regardless type, distance transition impedance, respond correctly. Main contribution paper reducing time from hundreds milliseconds several milliseconds.
